Each year UK weddings are worth £10 billion. GULP. I think my dearest mother has a point when she questions the price of everything wedding-related, the enormity of the wedding industry and the necessity of hen dos. And my mum isn’t stuck in the dark ages, she is pretty kick-ass.
And this isn’t just a gradual change from our parents’ generation to ours. I would argue that the wedding industry has pretty much exploded in just the last 5-10 or so years. There are a few things that I love about it all, but sooo many things that I just find BONKERS.
People willingly going into thousands of pounds of debt so that they can secure their ‘perfect day’. Surely life is expensive enough as it is: student debt, rent/mortgage, transport, endless bottles of red wine…surely we don’t need to spend thousands of pounds extra just for the sake of it?
I could go on, but will just link to one of my favourite well-known peoples, Lauren Laverne, to share her words of wisdom on super blog The Pool:
Lauren, you da bomb.
Peace out, Bridelings….let’s keep things simple x
